SHINE Analyzes IP for Eastern Virginia Medical School

Charlottesville, VA - Spring 2011 - SHINE Systems & Technologies (“SHINE”) engaged with Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to assess two pre-patent invention disclosures in April. Both assessments were delivered within the 30-day guarantee offered by SHINE. As is customary with its novel approach, SHINE offers an objective viability decision along with commercialization recommendations when the invention is viable.

SHINE Chief Scientist Dr. Terry Woodworth noted “This is our first engagement with Eastern Virginia Medical School, and we're excited about having EVMS entrust us with a commercial viability analysis of some of their exciting innovations.”

SHINE has performed PATES™ assessments for universities, federal government laboratories, and commercial firms, and has assessed other medical-related technologies. The EVMS engagement, moreover, was unique and expanded SHINE's portfolio. “The medical technologies we've reviewed in the past were primarily used behind the scenes, such as in laboratories, but the EVMS technologies are medical devices intended for direct use on patients,” stated Dr. Woodworth. “It's a field we're excited to support with our PATES™ products.”

Not only do these device technologies add to the breadth of technologies that SHINE has assessed using PATES™, but EVMS' Norfolk location is helping SHINE fulfill its goal of growth in the Hampton Roads area.

SHINE's President, Jeff Thomas, added, “Our popular Market Analysis Quad, a product we introduced this year, continues to deliver objective results. We are privileged to engage with a reputable organization such as EVMS and look forward to future efforts to fulfill our growth commitments in PATES™ assessments and in the Hampton Roads region.”

SHINE Systems & Technologies Employees Receive First Shining Star™ Awards

Charlottesville, VA - Spring 2011 - Three SHINE employees were recognized for their stellar performances by receiving the first-ever Shining Star™ Awards.

Employees John Boggs, Charles Jenkins III, and John Sullivan III were recognized by the US Army for exemplary performance in supporting the global war on terror. They received the Shining Star™ Award, which is presented to SHINE employees who demonstrate excellence and are recognized by customers.

A surprise award ceremony was held at the Timberwood Restaurant in Charlottesville, VA. Both Boggs and Jenkins were present, with Sullivan conferencing in from overseas.

According to SHINE's President, Jeff Thomas, the ceremony was important, as awards are, “part of the culture we are building.” “Our SHINE culture recognizes and rewards individual performance. It encourages others to aspire to new heights.”

After the reveal, Boggs stated, “I was surprised and honored to be singled out in such a splendid group of patriots and professionals. I had no idea that this was going to take place.”

The men each received a Certificate of Recognition with personalized remarks from the customer, an award trophy, and bonus. They were also recognized individually.

“[Bogg's] leadership and initiative to ensure the WTI Team is well-informed, educated and trained are unparalleled.”

Boggs felt honored for this recognition. “To be cited for 'leadership and initiative' in order to make something happen is an honor I will not soon forget. These are very strong, significant words to be associated with.”

“[Charles Jenkins'] sacrifices, dedication and exceptional performance have made our program reputation better than it has ever been before,” the customer stated in thanking Jenkins. He continued, “Thanks for leading one of our most important teams.”

Jenkins was appreciative of receiving such praise. “Our customer was very kind to say those words. Being where I was […] was not the most difficult assignment out there, but it wasn't a cake walk either. The fact that the program's Chief saw me that way and then took the time to write it down was pretty cool.”

Of Sullivan, the customer stated that his “quiet diligence is a credit to [him] and the nation. [His] work is changing the course of history.”

Thomas was pleased with the men's accomplishments and happy to give the awards. “I am honored to be associated with excellent men and their exemplary performances. This customer's recognition speaks volumes to their commitment to the global war on terror as well as SHINE's success.”

New Advisors, New Heights

Senior Advisors Prepared to Lead SHINE to Optimum Capacities

Charlottesville, VA - January 2011 - SHINE welcomed three new Senior Advisors to their team: Robert Bowers, Kenny Golden, and Walt Levering.

Or, we could say, somewhat new; two of the men have prior experience with SHINE. Golden and Levering shifted positions, as they recently held stance on the company's Board of Advisors. President Jeff Thomas decided to move them to Senior Advisors “to help the company reach its 2011 goals and jumpstart product development. Their experience on the Board of Advisors translates into an intimate knowledge of SHINE.”

The appointments will have immediate benefit to SHINE and its customers, as the three men each demonstrate extensive backgrounds and experience applicable to SHINE's goals.

Robert Bowers, new to SHINE, will assist in Product Development in Military Predictive Intelligence. He offers over 28 years of skillful involvement in special operations and intelligence along with ranger, special forces, air assault, and combat diver qualifications. Bowers' command experiences involve providing support to the National Security Agency (NSA) and commander of 204th Military Intelligence Battalion, US Army Europe. His staff experiences include chief of the concepts branch at the Intelligence Center and School, Commander of the National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC), Deputy Director of Intelligence at the National Military Command Center, and chief of the intelligence and electronic warfare division on the Army General Staff.

Bowers feels his “principal focus on predictive intelligence methods and practices and well-versed abilities in strategic and tactical intelligence matters” will prove most beneficial to SHINE's practices.

Kenny Golden, appointed to Sales and Business Development, brings over 35 years of Naval experience. Currently a retired US Navy Commodore, he still serves as an analyst and expert for the Joint Forces Command and provides his amphibious warfare expertise to deploying USN and USMC commands on the East Coast. Golden's past is extensive as well, as he led the largest amphibious force from the West Coast since the Korean War, commanding over 10,000 Sailors and Marines, seven capital ships, and over 90 aircraft. Golden has also received several awards including the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit with Gold Star.

Along with the above, Golden feels his personal value is in his “experience here in Hampton Roads as we work to expand our efforts in one of the largest military concentrated areas in the United States.”

Walt Levering joins SHINE with a wide array of professional experiences all of which are exceedingly suitable for a position in Sales and Business Development. Levering is an accomplished product and support manager and entrepreneur. He was both President and CEO of a community organization that was designated one of President George Herbert Walker Bush's "Thousand Points of Light", and was a founding officer and later Chairman of two organizations: the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council (VPTC) and the Virginia Technology Alliance (VTA). He is an active board member of the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council, Region 2000 Technology Council, Virginia Business Incubator Association, local Workforce Investment Board, and was a Board Chairman at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC).

Levering feels the “varied and interesting 'up close and personal' experiences of these numerous positions have been a great teacher,” and will be most profitable to his new role.

The Senior Advisors commend SHINE for its reliability to both its customers and employees. Bowers describes SHINE as “agile, creative, and honest,” to its customers with “a firm commitment to excellence.”

Golden agrees, stating “we are committed to [reliability] as part of our creed.”

Levering believes the atmosphere at SHINE contributes to emboldening its employees, which in turn, reflects on the customers as well. “The association with winners, the opportunity to grow and feel influence, the collegial and considerate atmosphere, and a good set of both work and personal ethics are some of SHINE's most positive attributes.”

The new appointments, according to Golden, “are going to shape the future of the company and the future of our new employees.”

SHINE's President, Jeff Thomas, is pleased with the experience these gentlemen bring, noting “We are excited to grow SHINE in 2011, and with the character and experience of these Advisors I have great expectations for their contributions to our growth. Our IC, State Government, and Commercial sector customers will understand the knowledge leadership these men will offer. Having known and worked with these Advisors at various points in my career, I have firsthand experience with their impacts. We are honored to have them on our Team.”

New SHINE PATES™ Product Launches with JMU and UVa

Market Analysis Quad (MAQ™) Offers Triage “Snapshot” IP Analysis

Charlottesville, VA - Spring 2010 - James Madison University (JMU) and the University of Virginia (UVa) are the first satisfied customers of the new PATES™ Market Analysis Quad (MAQ™) from SHINE Systems & Technologies (“SHINE”). JMU received a MAQ™ assessment of a pre-patent invention disclosure in February, and SHINE provided a MAQ™ assessment in June for the UVa-Coulter Translational Research Partnership both delivered within PATES™ 30-day promise.

The MAQ™, like the initial PATES™ product the Patent/Technology Analysis Summary Sheet (PASS™), accomplishes two goals: 1) determine the commercial viability of the IP, and 2) maximize the return to the IP owner. Both products are delivered within 30 days or less. A quick triage assessment of an intellectual property (IP), the MAQ™ offers the IP owner a quad chart deliverable focused on commercial viability analysis, recommended next steps, and an overall objective score. With this initial iteration of due diligence, the IP owner can quickly understand its IP's commercial potential.

David Chen, Director of Translational Research at the School of Medicine and Director of Coulter Translational Research Partnership, Biomedical Engineering, noted that: “SHINE's analysis, demonstrating expertise in cell-based products for regenerative medicine, offered critical commercialization insights to assist with our rigorous funding decision model.”

“The MAQ™ offers IP owners a low-cost decision tool to triage their IP, identify those likely to succeed in the marketplace, and focus the critical issues toward a successful launch”, said SHINE President Jeff Thomas.

SHINE Launches its Summer Intern Program in 2009

In the Intern’s Words – Ramblings and Insights Into a Summer Internship

In the Intern’s Words – Ramblings and Insights Into a Summer Internship

Charlottesville, VA — Summer 2009 — My time spent in Charlottesville working at Shine Systems & Technologies (“SHINE”; www.ShineSandT.com) this summer has been pretty enjoyable as well as very educational. I can honestly say that from the time that I’ve spent working with SHINE this summer, I have learned more than I had ever thought I would. I now know what Cloud Computing is as well as how much business phone systems and business class internet costs (and all of their features). I also know what the going rate per square foot is for commercial real estate in several parts of the state of Virginia. As a student at Juniata College studying Engineering Physics, these bits of information previously weren’t ranking very high on my list of “Things to Know.” However, in the future if I find myself working for a small business again, I will be well versed in these areas and will be able to handle them with ease.

Now, I bet you’re probably wondering what parts of this internship I’ve enjoyed after raving about the awesome experience I had working here this summer. Well, I’ve found it’s really great being able to get to know everyone that works here. I’ve become a semi-regular at one of the local Starbucks (which is either kind of cool, or really sad; I’m still not too sure). I really love the fact that I have my own office. Whenever I’m home I talk with my friends about their jobs and I always ask, “Do you have your own office? I DO!!!” Another great thing about this internship is the feeling of great importance when working on projects that are sensitive and can’t be discussed with other people. I also enjoy the fact that I have fairly flexible hours here. It’s also pretty nice that I’m not worked into the ground every week, working like 50 hours per week, like some people I know. With the hours that I have here, I’m able to actually go out and have plenty of energy to explore and enjoy myself from time to time.

I will say there were a couple things about this internship that I haven’t enjoyed all that much, but they are far less than the things I enjoy about it. The fact that during the week I’m living in an area where I know basically no one, especially no one my age, has been a little rough. Being far away from all of my friends and family has also been a little difficult at times, perhaps because I have to fend for myself for dinner every night. With the amount of fast food I’ve consumed, I think it’s a medical miracle I’m still alive.

There are a few things that I’ve done here outside the office which have helped me overcome the few downsides to being in an unfamiliar area down here. I was blessed with the opportunity to go on a tour of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS; www.iihs.org). While there, I got to watch a live crash test and see results of the various crash tests they perform at their facility. I also went on a tour of the Monticello which was extremely beautiful. I absolutely loved the view up there, and some of Jefferson’s inventions shown in his house were rather interesting. Being the huge car guy that I am I had to find something car related to do while I’m down here. I did some research and found out there’s a local VW club called WunderWagens that meets every Sunday at the Chipotle, so I decided I’d try to make it to a couple meetings. Turns out they’re all great people, and I really enjoy talking to all of them about cars and other interests we happen to share.

I feel this internship, combined with the degree in Engineering Physics that I will receive from Juniata College (www.juniata.edu) in May of 2010, will help me enormously in my future, no matter what I end up doing. Juniata is a liberal arts school, which helps its students become well-rounded by allowing us to learn things outside of our major so we can be more successful in the future. This internship has taken this philosophy and expanded upon it, teaching me things I would have never learned in any class I could have taken. I now know what it is like to work for a small company, and the struggles and triumphs they go through. This has been an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Note: SHINE’s first intern’s residence is located in the Washington, DC metro area.

SHINE President Invited as Panelist at Valley Innovation Network Event

SHINE Shares IP Analysis Insights with Shenandoah Valley Entrepreneurial Community

SHINE Shares IP Analysis Insights with Shenandoah Valley Entrepreneurial Community

Harrisonburg, VA — SHINE President Jeff Thomas served as an invited panelist sharing his insights on intellectual property (IP) analysis at the inaugural Valley Innovation Network event held at the Spotswood Country Club.

The Valley Innovation Network event brought together over 80 inventors, entrepreneurs, service providers, and advisors interested in developing innovations and growing business in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The morning was dedicated to SRI International’s Disciplines of Innovation workshop helping attendees learn techniques for creating value for their organization’s customers and stakeholders. Following a networking lunch, three panels of speakers provided informative presentations and answers to attendees’ questions on Business and Legal Planning, University Collaborations, and Funding Sources.

SHINE President Jeff Thomas led off the Business and Legal Planning panel with a presentation on the importance of a thorough analysis of IP as a prerequisite to its commercialization. Understanding the commercial viability of the IP requires analysis of overlap with existing patents, commercial readiness, other technologies and IP owners in the IP’s innovation domain, applications of the technology (including uses in alternative markets), and bundling opportunities. He noted SHINE’s patent pending PATES™ model offers this analysis and recommendations for a roadmap to commercialization.

“We are honored to be invited to participate in the first Valley Innovation Network event” said Mr. Thomas. James Madison University, SRI International and all the event partners are to be congratulated on an excellent educational and networking opportunity for the Valley’s growing entrepreneurial community of which SHINE is pleased to be a part.”

PATES™ Model Presented to Virginia Technology Transfer Leaders

PATES™ Model Presented to Virginia Technology Transfer Leaders

Charlottesville, VA — The Academic Licensing Community of Virginia (ALCOVe), meeting at the University of Virginia Patent Foundation, invited SHINE President Jeff Thomas to present SHINE’s patent pending PATES™ model for assessing the commercial viability of intellectual property (IP).

Created in 2003, ALCOVe serves the technology transfer professionals of Virginia’s academic and non-profit research institutions. Its membership includes technology transfer directors, licensing professionals, patent attorneys, and others together constituting a valuable network of experience and contacts for commercializing inventions from their respective institutions. ALCOVe members attending the meeting represented Eastern Virginia Medical School, George Mason University, James Madison University (JMU), Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech.

Mr. Thomas emphasized the two primary goals of PATES™ - determine commercial viability and maximize return to the IP owner – as well as the marriage of technology, process, and expert analysis to enable the first goal to be achieved in 30 days or less. Using the PASS™ from a recent SHINE assessment of microfluidics technologies for member JMU, he highlighted the elements of a PATES™ analysis as well as the actionable recommendations captured in a PASS™ presented during the meeting.

Attendee and SHINE Chief Scientist Dr. Terry Woodworth was “impressed with the discussion our PATES™ presentation stimulated among the ALCOVe members. Among other benefits, third-party analyses like PATES™ will help ALCOVe identify opportunities for bundling complementary technologies across Virginia’s research institutions. We share ALCOVe’s commitment to moving Virginia’s innovations effectively and optimally into the marketplace.”

Shine Systems & Technologies Prepares to Launch Patent Technology Exploitation System

Shine Systems & Technologies engages key partner and drafts a White Paper for the Patent Technology...

Shine Systems & Technologies engages key partner and drafts a White Paper for the Patent Technology Exploitation System (PATES). The tidal wave of intelligence data requires their exploitation be characterized by accuracy, deliberateness, and action. When canvassing Tier 1 technologies in the National Intelligence Priorities Framework, timeliness can mean proactive measures, reactive responses, or both. PATES includes an expansive repository of foreign-based patents, and the methodologies applied demonstrate a context of these patents and their relationships to US patents, foreign government entity research (technical, persons involved, locations, etc.), weaponization, and in some cases theft. Equipping analysts with the data and context as well as the automated tools to exploit these two vital force multipliers, the PATES delivers results for more reasoned judgments and informed proactive assessments. The RACE (Reporting, Analysis, Complement, Exploitation) with time brings PATES, SST and its partner Innovation Data Solutions LLC, and the analysts together in a joint, collaborative, and efficient unit.

The PATES’ features encompass, among other capabilities, an ongoing review of the changing economies that drive states of concerns. By assessing patterns in technology development, the relationships and possibilities for technology transfer among these states are identified as they venture from government sponsorship to private development. By following this path, SST and analysts can determine where key technological knowledge is imbedded and associations between legitimate institutions and the defense materiel development institutions. For example, a person of interest may work for a University (at the direction of that government or not) and pursue a particular technology advancement. That University’s relationships to US agencies, US commercial entities, and foreign entities (states and non-states) will reveal where a technology’s readiness level is as well as where that technology is going (i.e., R&D, location(s), etc.). This progress speaks to our preparation (counter proliferation), countermeasures (materiel development and CONOPS), and response (from collection to escalation).

PATES is an intellectual property information management system featuring the world's largest standardized database of patents and patent related information. It has grown in robustness and reliability through its database collection holdings of the world’s patent issuing authorities, technical conference proceedings, scientific and technical journals, and academic research and development disclosures. Data sources and feeds are acquired via subscription, barter data exchanges, and/or data purchase to compile one of the most thorough compilations of scientific, technical, and intellectual property information in the world. To complement the patent information, global academic, scientific, and technical disclosures data are integrated to create a virtual global innovation pulsometer that tracks technology innovations worldwide.

PATES’ unique value proposition lies in tracking and analyzing the suspected proliferation of global technology innovations as well as the researchers, scientists, and related individuals involved in the suspected proliferation activities. The system serves as a critical resource in the management of public and private technology proliferation risks and related targeting activities. Additionally, PATES features Government Interest information for US innovations, new statistical and geographic visualization tools, and enhanced customization functionality. The key to unlock the PATES utility is the exploitation and consumption of its rich data to arrive at a capabilities-based perspective.

The approach to the most effective exploitation of the PATES data is a RACE (Reporting, Analysis, Complement, Exploitation) to process data toward an actionable end goal. RACE describes the services and products generated using PATES, is based on a collaborative model, and produces results that engage action. Those actions may be based in reasoned judgments (for Reporting), subject matter technical expertise (for Analysis), support to existing analytical systems and/or models (for Complement), and/or consumption (for Exploitation). The flexibility offered is intentional; as priorities dictate or preparation mandates, the PATES RACE solution offers data exploitation on an analyst’s terms.
